One of the big changes coming to Disney Infinity 2.0 (in addition to all those Marvel heroes and villains) is the ability to make bigger and more complex toy boxes. This brings with it new opportunities for designing bigger and more intricate games and experiences.
In Infinity 2.0, Avalanche has added something seemingly simple to expand design: doors. With this new feature, you’ll be able to connect up to 10 toy boxes.
If you want to create a hub-and-spoke experience or a series of 10 linear levels, you can do that. You can also download Toy Boxes from the community hub in-game and connect them to your own creations. In the first Disney Infinity title, Toy Boxes were outdoor spaces. Now, you can create indoor environments.
We spoke with executive producer John Vignocchi about the new interior design features, and learned a bit more about player customization options, including a space that grows as you accomplish more in-game.
“You can tack on a series of rooms, customize them, and even place furniture objects inside of those rooms,” Vignocchi told us. “We’ve got things from old arcade games like Tron, the rose from Beauty and the Beast, stained glass windows, and plenty of superhero-themed items from our Marvel Super Heroes collection.”
Many of these are tied to accomplishing feats or are available for purchase through sparks (in-game currency). Some are tied to specific playsets, so there is a Toy Box component in addition to the adventure modes.
You can invite friends into your personal space, which will grow as you complete feats and spend sparks (in-game currency). You’ll be able to decorate and apply a variety of themes to make your interior unique.
My personal favorite when I first saw this earlier this summer was a Hail Hydra banner. This happened to be right after I saw Captain America: The Winter Soldier, so you can imagine my delight in putting Captain America and Nick Fury in there.
You can also unlock classic Marvel decorations like Captain America’s shield or, if you prefer your stars and stripes functional, a light fixture shaped like it. Another humorous inclusion that caught my eye was a schwarma cosmetic item. Anyone who has seen the post-credits scene from The Avengers film will get the joke.
Disney Infinity 2.0 Marvel Super Heroes is out on September 23 on Xbox One, Xbox 360, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 3, Wii U, and Wii. A Toy Box starter kit is due at retail and digitally on November 4.
