Trailer Roundup: Platformers, puzzles, and hungry fish, oh my!

sproggiwoodtown.png

Today's trailer roundup is mostly games that aren't out yet, but they look like they'll be good when they get here. We have a platformer with a gravity-flipping mechanic, another platformer with a rotating mechanic, a block-breaking puzzle platformer hybrid, a difficult minimalist dodging game, a numeric puzzle game, a single- and cooperative multiplayer puzzle game, a short-duration RTS meant to be replayed, a turn-based roguelike based on Finnish mythology, and a game about fish gobbling up everything in sight in much the same way the prince in Katamari Damacy rolls up everything he can find.

The Adventures of Clive McMulligan on Planet Zeta Four

A retro-styled platformer with a gravity flipping mechanic. That's not necessarily a new concept, but Clive McMulligan is set to allow flipping back and forth on the fly to allow a wacky sort of flight. This one is headed to Windows only, but there's a demo available. They also have a Greenlight campaign going.

Blackhole

A puzzle platformer in which you have to rotate the stages in 90-degree increments clockwise and counter-clockwise, changing gravity to make it possible to get to new places. It has things like block and tackle systems which are affected by the gravitational shifts. It'll be coming to Windows, Mac, and Linux in Q4 2014.

Blockadillo

The developer's short description: "Blockadillo is about smashing colored blocks with an arduous armadillo! The catch? The armadillo moves up and down by itself the whole time. You can only steer left and right! Think Break Out meets platformer." Blockadillo is coming to Android in the near future.

Colourless

This one is an arcade game that began as a Ludum Dare 26 (theme: Minimalism) entry, where it was 52nd in the Fun category and 89th in Theme. The goal is to survive as long as possible as a geometric figure that shrinks over time. Running into a geometric figure of the same kind increases the size of the player figure temporarily; running into a different figure changes the player's shape. Colourless is designed to be a super-hard game along the lines of Super Hexagon. It's headed for iOS, Android, and Blackberry in August.

Digits

Simple Machine, which recently released the simple-but-difficult word game LEX, has just released their second game in a month. Digits is a puzzle game featuring music by Mokhov in which all but the early tutorial puzzles have multiple solutions. For those looking for more of a challenge, beating a puzzle opens up a replay mode in which players must make their last tap on a designated tile. It's free to download for iOS and Android and comes with 100 puzzles right off. More puzzles can be obtained via in-app purchase.

Parcel

Parcel is a puzzle game in which the player (or players, since there is a co-op mode) must use characters with different talents to get a parcel to its destination. It's got a story about a "not-so-unlikely future" and a level editor, to boot. The game is set for a 2015 release, but they've already got it up on Greenlight and it seems to be doing well. You'll also find more details about the game on the Greenlight page. It's headed for Windows, Mac, and Linux.

Prophour23

This looks to be a unique real-time strategy game. It's designed to be short, about 15 minutes long ("if you're good", the developer qualifies) and have lots of replay value. It also involves sketched organs on papyrus with bugs crawling everywhere, and if that's not a recipe for interesting then I don't know what is. This one is headed to Windows, Mac, and Linux later this year.

Sproggiwood

From the developer: "Sproggiwood is a story-driven, turn-based roguelike set in a world of mischief and wonder. One moment, you're a simple farmer from the peaceful island of Clog -- the next, you're lured through a mysterious portal by a talking sheep. Now you're the prisoner of Sproggi, a mischievous forest spirit who enlists your help civilizing his realm. Work with Sproggi to grow your civilization, plunder procedural dungeons, and unlock six unique classes." It's based on Finnish mythology and was Greenlit in two and a half days. It'll be coming to Windows, Mac, and Linux this fall.

Tasty Blue

Play as a goldfish, dolphin, or shark in this game about eating everything. It reminds me of nothing so much as Katamari Damacy. A PC version has been available for Windows and Mac for a while now, and it was also just released on iOS. The PC version sports a co-op mode for two players and has a demo available. The iOS version is free to download with an in-app purchase to unlock the full game.
